narrative

what is really emergent

so we've got an event system.

we have some minimal implemented "internal" events (events that give personality and slice of life events about your characters). we have some vague ideas about "external" events (events that show off your neighbors, create player interest, create some conflict/dangle rewards, etc).

what we don't have is real emergent narrative.

we need ongoing emergent scenarios to play out (directly via concrete numbers-based game mechanics) that help the player to start constructing the story in their head.

examples:

  • we need the stronger neighbor to start bullying the player in multiple ways over time, and dynamically panic (and call back to the earlier bullying) when the player starts to overpower them later.
  • we need the three equally matched factions to get stuck in a protracted 2 front war with each other, weakening all 3 but creating unique outcomes depending on what happens naturally or what the player intervention is (player conquers 1, other 2 merge, etc)
  • etc etc MANY of these

and for all of these, we need them to interact natively with real, actual game mechanics and not just ge 100 special cases masquerading as depth consider uncharted waters new horizons ali start: borrow money from characters to pay it back with emotionally resonant backstory: you need to figure out trading as player (same as character) and you have this real game mechsnic of paying back these characters as the goal. all the while narratively characters are maming fun of you for "not being able to do it"
