In search of emergence
Plans regarding events and event criteria
Every situation you are confronted with needs to be a direct result of something you did.
No "cause some trouble" events; events happen because of game state, they do not invent game state. Otherwise it will make genuine emergent stories feel scripted.
EVENTS SHOULD LITERALLY SAY: this happened because X
Here are our current tools:
- Character current opinion of each other
- Character opinion history
- Character used to like X but now hates X
- Council status
- Not on council and all roles are taken
- In a specific role
- Not on council and there's a role open
- Battle results
- Win (and units that specifically performed well)
- Lose (and units that specifically performed badly)
- think survivor and challenge reactions
- Character greviously injured in a battle
- Captured commanders and what you do with them
- Execute (final words & nobunaga's ambition style portrait slice)
- Recruit
- Troop count and ratio missing
- Faction troop was recruited from
- Resource shortfall status
Here are some events that use these tools:
- characters X and Y are in a bitter feud: what do you do?
- character X demands to know why they are not on the council
- character X sees [council role] open and asks to be considered for it
- character X (was in battle) blames character Y (performed badly in battle loss) for the loss at Z
- character X (was in battle) celebrates character Y (performed well in battle win) for the win at Z
- character X (was in battle) is wary of character Y (performed badly in battle win) despite the win at Z
- character X (was in battle) is inspired by character Y (performed well in battle win) despite the loss at Z
- character X is upset their troop hasn't been reinforced yet
- character X suggests a raid on Z to stave off the impending shortfall
- character X (council role architect?) is panicking because county cannot be developed any further and map space is running out
Here are some county actions that feed into these tools:
- Scrounge for money: infringes on something character X was doing
- Need many variations for this
- Develop industry (income): infringes on something character X was doing
- Need many variations for this
- Raid neighbor for money: worsens neighbor relations
